The entire month of February is Black History Month. This month-long event acknowledges and celebrates both the struggles and accomplishments of African Americans throughout history. Contract Services Group, Inc. (CSG) is committed to recognizing the valiant efforts of African Americans and conducting a workplace that is free of discrimination of any kind.
Background of Black History Month:
The celebration began in 1926 as a week-long event but received growing popularity with the help of community celebrations and the Civil Rights Movement. In 1976, February was appropriately selected as Black History Month as it coincides with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas (link), two pivotal figures in African American History.
Black Americans fought relentlessly for their freedoms and rights. Such accomplishments include litigations such as Brown v. Board of Education, shattering color barriers in sports, and the Civil Rights Movement.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a landmark case in America as its provisions completely altered everyday operations. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. It addressed voting rights, employment, public accommodations, education, and more.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC):
With these achievements, organizations such as The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) were born out of. The EEOC "establishes and enforces federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, transgender status, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information."
The EEOC investigates and settles any discrimination charges in the workplace in order to protect individuals. EEOC also takes preventative actions to ensure discrimination does not happen. The EEOC's main mission is to ensure employers offer fair jobs and prioritize an inclusive workplace.
