What’s the Best Re-Opening Disinfection Plan for Your Business?

Updated: Sep 23

23-February 2021

As Flu season comes to a slow and COVID-19 restrictions are lifting, your business, hotel, school, or office may be re-opened for the first time in months or even a year! While this is a great opportunity, there are many challenges that business owners and managers need to navigate. Reducing the risk of exposure to COVID-19 by cleaning and disinfection is an important part of opening public spaces that will require careful planning. Contract Services Group compiled the following tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help you get started.

Determine What Needs to Be Cleaned vs Disinfected

Some surfaces only need to be cleaned with soap and water. Outdoor areas generally only require normal routine cleaning and don’t need additional disinfection. However, there are outdoor surfaces that can benefit from it. Focus on disinfecting hard surfaces that are frequently used like tables, chairs and doorknobs. The majority of your disinfection will most likely take place indoors. While developing a re-opening disinfection plan for the indoor areas of your business, you should consider the material of your surfaces. Most hard surfaces can follow the same disinfection procedure, but items made up of soft and porous material are difficult to disinfect correctly. If possible, remove items like pillows, curtains and area rugs from your public space or clean and launder as the item’s label states.

Unoccupied Areas

Think about the last time an employee or customer was in your business. If it has been unoccupied for more than 7 days, you may not need to take any additional disinfection precautions. it will only need your normal routine cleaning to open the area. This is because the virus that causes COVID-19 has not been shown to survive on surfaces longer than this time. However, once your business does re-open, you’ll need to implement a disinfection plan to help your community stay safe and healthy.

Reduce Potential Exposure

Planning your re-opening disinfection plan may involve changing the way you do business. It’s important to take your time learning all of your options and know that you can change your business setup at any time. Consider implementing behavioral changes like eliminating high touch surfaces from public access, wiping down necessary surfaces after every use or removing items in common spaces. Make sure you follow local news about COVID-19 transmissions to decide what is best for your area.
